Our civilization rests on resources. Some are natural (e.g., food, energy), and some are man-made (e.g., roads, bridges, tunnels). Some man-made resources are intellectual and, therefore, more abstract and less visible. This includes our legal infrastructure and the financial systems it supports—money, currency, banking, exchanges, and the financial liquidity they bring. Most of us have lived our lives in a world supported by liquid transactions— currency, securities, commodities—backed by a strong banking infrastructure and robust financial markets. We take this financial liquidity for granted—like the air we breathe.
