President Obama announced Wednesday that national security adviser Thomas E. Donilon is resigning his post and will be replaced by U.N. Ambassador Susan E. Rice, a close confidant who has been strongly criticized by Republicans but is widely expected to move into the job.

Obama said Donilon “has decided to step aside at the beginning of July.” Rice, one of Obama’s most trusted foreign policy advisers, does not need Senate confirmation to take Donilon’s place.
