“Nothing is black or white, nothing’s ‘us or them.’ But then there are magical, beautiful things in the world. There’s incredible acts of kindness and bravery, and in the most unlikely places, and it gives you hope.” ~Dave Matthews

I had been scheduled to be in Italy in October for almost a year. When I realized that I would be flying home right before the election, I decided instead to stay in Europe and go north to one of my favorite places to hide away and “get my perspective.” Perspective is essential to stay connected to the changes underway, not to mention laughter and beauty.

So I headed to Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, more specifically to a small, beautiful sailing community called Stavoren, which is the oldest city in the province.

I have some excellent friends and allies who run a lovely little apartment centrally located near the water.  The summer is busy with German and Dutch tourists. Winter is serene and beautiful. For me, it is the perfect place to enjoy coherence.

A short walk down the closest canal also happens to be one of the finest neighborhood restaurants on the planet, Cafe Max, which is pictured at the very top. The food, the service, and the neighborhood warmth is as good as the name.
