Why bust up organized religion and sports events? An ancient concept, described in the Book of Enoch, but likely a gnostic concept – might provide a deeper clue: Egregore. An egregore is a kind of group mind or spirit. Generally they are formed unconsciously, but they are always formed when a group of people get together. The more often they get together, the more people are involved, the stronger this spirit is. Your Philip story would be an example on a small scale.
Egregores acquire a life of their own and can be easily felt once you become aware of them. Historic leaders were consciously or unconsciously aware of this phenomenon and could feed off of the energy that the group generated. Concerts are another common egregore form.
