“Liberty, equality, brotherhood—these ideas are deeply rooted in every soul.”

~ Thomas Meyer

By Catherine Austin Fitts

A century ago, Rudolf Steiner delivered a series of large public lectures in Vienna. At one of the lectures, he gave his last presentation on what he called the “threefold social order,” seeking to explain the concepts in straightforward terms accessible to the general public.

In this episode of the Spiritual Science in the Present Age Series, Thomas Meyer carries on this legacy, sharing his reflections on Steiner’s important contribution and on what the threefold social order can offer us in the present age.

The threefold social order makes historical reference to the French Revolution and the birth (before the revolution turned sour) of three great human ideas that, in Thomas’s view, “resonate in every soul”: liberty, equality, and brotherhood (or what the French call “fraternity”). This trinity of ideas, in turn, corresponds to three spheres of social activity—cultural, legal, and economic—that require coordination but, as Steiner argued, ultimately must remain independent of one another.

Unfortunately, we often see heavy-handed subordination of one sphere (for example, the rule of law) to another (such as the economy). Other challenges include growing central control, materialism, and ideological dogmatism, to name just a few. For Thomas, the antidote to these challenges—fundamental to achieving our full potential in the cultural, legal, and economic spheres—is the development of a strong and active spiritual life rooted in truly independent thinking.

Join me and Thomas as we build our understanding of why the threefold social order is still so immensely necessary and relevant in our time.

  1. I learned so much in the video “the three worlds” by steiner. Go three Fold

  2. Hello Catherine,
I have a question I would love to ask Thomas Meyer someday. Has he ever read about the Shroud of Turin and what does he think of it?

  3. Hello Catherine.
I watched this video a couple of days ago and it has been percolating in my head ever since. I know you have had Thomas Meyer a number of times now. He seems to be full of grace and wisdom.
My impression Meyer’s talk is a good topic for a political science class but it does not have the power to change people like a good old fashioned revival.
I heard you say that you were very disappointed with many Christian Leaders and you seem to be looking elsewhere for the spiritual power to fight this great darkness headed our way. I just want to say don’t look for revival from the clergy or denominational leaders. When Christ came to earth how did those spiritual leaders receive him? I think revival will come from the people when the spirit moves. The clergy might try to grab it and try to control it, but they are unlikely to start it.

  4. Thanks you both so much for this wonderful interview! One very readable book that shows the basis for Steiner’s three-fold model for society which was built on the human body is “Living With Your Body” by Walther Buhler. It illustrates how each of the three spheres, the nervous system, the circulation, and the metabolic limbic systems work in separate and interrelated ways. Another person who has worked in the world with three-folding is Nicanor Perlasis. HIs book published in 2000, and has since been reworked, “Shaping Globalization, Civil Society, Cultural Power, and Three-folding” helped me to see how some things are out of balance in the world structure and how some things might be worked with in a better way. He also wrote a book published in 2018 trying to warn the world about the powers of Ahriman, and what has come into being, “Humanity’s Last Stand” in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” There are sections in the book that give inspiration and hope for how to move forward. His current work: Covid’s Call to Humanity, has, like you Catherine tried to wake people up and help them think for themselves. Particularly at episode 33, he begins to speak to an international citizenry, where there seems to be a turning point towards giving people back the strength to build the spiritual/cultural/independent thinking aspect.

Also, the comment about people not being able to glean from their spiritual discipline in Waldorf Schools. I am not sure what exactly you are referring to. But, In my experience, people are often attracted to Waldorf Education without really understanding of what is behind it. It looks holistic, beautiful, etc, there is a premature desire to grow more Waldorf Schools without the proper resources. It is as Thomas said, we have to learn to discern when it is the right time to bring something. But they often bring in people who have not studied Anthroposophy for long or at all. Then people get in decision making places without proper understanding. And then for many it is a learn as you go culture. There can be so much clash. BUT, There is still something happening for the children. If there is a substantial group of people STRIVING to work with the basis of this education, and three-folding, the children will know this and gain from that. And, the fact that they work with the arts so broadly is very important. One way to develop independent thinking is to practice an art, any art. These teachers and children practice many forms of art, drawing, painting, music, sculpture, movement, writing, poetry. The arts build moral forces. One learns to listen to ones inner voice, to see, to listen, to discern, make decisions. to look at things from many points of view, to develop capacities, to live with and correct errors to think on ones own and more. It is the arts that give us the potential to become more human. If all people would take up a practice of an art. We would clearly understand the value of the sacred space of independent thinking within each individual.

  5. My husband and I thank you both for what you are doing here! We agree that it’s vital that people be exposed to threefold principles, and to try to understand the reality and needs of their own human spirit in this time of intense Ahrimanic attack. Can you please post the name of the Karl Heyer book? I couldn’t catch the title. Thank you!

      1. Thomas

I want to personally thank you for your sharing your wisdom. I did not know that a non physical realm truly existed before listening to your interviews with Catherine. Between the two of you, the thoughts that are discussed started my path to find the higher. Gratitude.
