The “Mass for troubled times”—a magnificent master piece by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)— is our music of the week.
Writing this mass toward the end of his life, the trouble during Haydn’s time was the Napoleonic Wars after the French Revolution, which brought turmoil and havoc to many European regions.
The outstanding performance we hear and see in this recording is conducted by Norwegian conductor, music professor, and, yes, former national football (soccer) player Grete Pedersen. Under her guidance, the music receives a special dramatics and power that is simply captivating.

Since I still attend Latin Mass pre-Vatican II, (not as often as I would like) I found a website (listed below) to help my kiddos understand Latin. My older brother, God rest his soul, took Latin Jr High-High School -graduated 1970. He loved knowing a “dead” language and used to say he thought it was removed from schools because it brought us closer to God by having everyone say the same prayer/song in the same way all over the world.
