We’ve recommended this movie before, but it’s worth watching if you haven’t done so yet.

Yes, it is possible to make a 3h 20min movie about clocks. Far from being boring, this movie is a thrilling adventure, telling the story of the search for a solution to the “greatest scientific problem of the time” – determining longitude while at sea. The movie follows the struggles and determination of a carpenter-turned-clockmaker convinced that the solution involved accurately measuring time instead of relying on astronomy. That’s how the marine chronometer was invented and is how navigation became safer.

This TV movie was produced in 2000 by Charles Sturridge and stars Jeremy Irons and Sir Michael Gambon.
