Although Capra ran into production issues that lead to serious cost overruns, and initially received poor reviews for the movie, Lost Horizon ended up being a classic that was selected in 2016 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
The original film was 3 1/2 hours long.
After an unexpected reaction from a test audience… Capra threw the first two reels in the fire, and started the title on the 3rd reel.
