The coolest techie we know, Court Skinner of Computers for Everyone, in Palo Alto says Puppy Linux is going to resurrect antique computers (that is, more than ten years old). New computers can use it too. It looks pretty cool. Every thing that helps us shift out of Microsoft is a good thing for sure!

Bob,
I looked at DSL and it is beautiful, but seems to be for a slightly different purpose than Puppy. I’m working on weaning folks away from their complete dependence on Microsoft for an operating system and Puppy is a bit closer to the typical Microsoft user’s comfort zone. On the other hand, I’ve had situations where DSL allows me to boot a system that Puppy wouldn’t. One of the differences, however, is the ease of mounting disks. Puppy’s new 4.0 has an icon on the desk top that makes it almost fool proof (not as slick as Ubuntu, but Ubuntu takes more horsepower to provide that level of of clever.) Anyway, they are all fun and allow one to get serious work done, which is what really counts. Thanks for your suggestion. I’ll keep working on it.

Take a look at Damn Small Linux as another compact distro.
