“The universe is like a safe to which there is a combination. But the combination is locked up in the safe.”
~ Peter De Vries
By Catherine Austin Fitts
In the 1970’s, Dan Perkins was drafted by his father to build a family safe. Friends started asking his dad to build one for them, leading to the founding of Hidden Safes in Memphis, Tennessee.
Now, almost four decades later, Dan is the president of a thriving family business which has installed thousands of hidden safes and safe rooms in homes and offices throughout the United States (and around the world).
This week Dan joins me on the Solari Report to discuss “How to Buy and Install a Safe.”
As negative interest rates descend upon Japan, safe sales are rising. Along with rising precious metals prices and concerns about the financial system, low or negative interest rates are a reason to consider maintaining safes at home and at the office.
Initially, I believed that buying and installing a safe would be simple. I soon discovered that there are far more uses for a home or office safe than I anticipated. Moreover, the types of safes and the issues involved in a successful installation can be complex. Now, after many years of using safes and talking with clients about the safes they’ve installed, it seems a good time for the Solari Report to publish an introduction to buying and installing a safe.
This report will dovetail with our 1st Quarter Wrap Up in early April. The theme will be “Where to Stash Your Cash in 2016.”
In Let’s Go to the Movies, I will review Undoctored: The Hidden Story Behind the AMA’s Plot to Destroy Chiropractic. I have had a chiropractor since I was 30 — I cannot imagine living without one. So, I am delighted to learn of this new documentary describing the fierce political headwinds that chiropractors have been forced to overcome.
Zanotti Armor out of Waterloo Iowa build great safes as well, designed to come apart, heavy duty….but husband & “strong” wife can move and assemble sections.

Thank you for this link, Jacklynne! These Zanotti safes look ideal. Love the modular concept enabling you to take the safe with you if you move. Cheers.
Hi Catherine,
William Engdahl’s profile of Trump explains the connection to Roger Stone who you mentioned in your recent Money & Markets.

Knowing absolutely nothing about safes, I’d be interested in knowing what constitutes a “good” safe, i.e. minimum standards. Wish Dan was in my neighborhood. Thanks for an enjoyable interview.

In my retail job we used a safe service locally that was excellent.
Turning old safe knobs is just like in the movies, you get a feel for it.
Your valuables are NOT SAFE outside of the safe.
You don’t need the story but it is:
I was assistant manager of a small department store on the Mississippi in the South East in the 1980’s and early 90’s.
Only a few managers knew the Safe combination. When the daily deposit was worked up, we’d put it in the safe. When the head cashier was ready to request the deposit be available for pick up by armed guard to deposit at bank, we’d open the safe and put the deposit on top.
When the Deposit Pick Up service arrived, the cash and checks money bag was no where to be found.
Police investigated, Security suspected an employee had passed the cash and check deposit to internal Security. Probably dumped the checks.
I worried through a vacation to Disney World after that loss. It was not on my review…a new Regional Manager was doing a new hire because my boss, store manager., had left the company. Took two months to get a new manager.
Cash was not a lot but back then checks were both for purchases and payment on credit terms. We did not ask Check loss customers to write another check for about $10,000!
Operating procedure changed, Corporate Construction put up a wall between services and the cash office.
