Our Hero of the Week is someone who carries a legacy, someone with a greater vision for life, and someone with a big heart—Sally Fallon Morell—co-founder and president of the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF), which she built with Mary G. Enig to restore “nutrient-dense whole foods” to society.
Under her leadership, the Weston A. Price Foundation has flourished into a vast organization with thousands of members and a powerful network of hundreds of chapters all over the United States and worldwide. This year’s annual Wise Traditions conference, where Catherine spoke, was one of the largest events yet, drawing nutritionists, activists, farmers, health practitioners, researchers, and families together to strengthen connections and understanding.
One of WAPF’s major accomplishments under Sally’s leadership, through A Campaign for Real Milk, is the legalization of raw milk in the majority of U.S. states. More than anyone else, she was also responsible for the creation of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund whose founding president, until 2016, was none other than the host of the Solari Food Series, Pete Kennedy. The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund aims to protect the rights of farmers to provide meat, eggs, raw dairy products, vegetables, and other foods directly to consumers. And it is the Weston A. Price Foundation that helps connect the providers of these healthy foods with consumers.
In this way, Sally has helped numerous small farmers and local artisans who are producing foods. But in addition, there are thousands who have recovered from health problems due to the Foundation’s nutritional advice emphasizing nutrient-dense foods, popularizing ferments such as kombucha and sauerkraut, and undoing the “cholesterol myth” and low-fat mania.
Sally Fallon Morell started a health and food revolution and is known for a number of amazing cookbooks that are available in several languages (German, Italian, Dutch, Russian). Among them is the best-seller and classic Nourishing Traditions®: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats, which has sold over 600,000 copies in the U.S. In it, she recommends natural and frowned-upon foods such as fresh butter, eggs, grass-fed meats, and homemade bone broths with their remarkable health benefits.
Dr. Tom Cowan, who has appeared on the Solari Report, was a founding WAPF board member and remains on the board to this day, also co-authoring several books with Sally.
Sally has never shied away from taking strong positions on “unfashionable” topics, and is not afraid to call out the fraud and the dangers of vaccines and pharmaceuticals.
Sally’s publishing company, New Trends Publishing, publishes her cookbooks and other titles that are in line with the Foundation’s mission. In addition, WAPF publishes a quarterly journal entitled Wise Traditions in Food, Farming, and the Healing Arts full of rich and timely information. Sally also runs her own pasture-based P.A. Bowen Farmstead and an artisan raw cheese-making operation that has produced award-winning cheeses. She writes her own blog under Nourishing Traditions.
She is simply tireless, a motivator, and a wise leader. She does what is right, not what is popular.
There is so much we can learn from her. Sally Fallon Morell is not only a hero on Solari but also in the eyes of countless people grateful for her work.
