‘This is devastating,’ school official says of company’s plan to cut $40 million in property taxes.”

Southwest Ohio school districts said they have recently received budget-shattering news.

Duke Energy, one of their biggest taxpayers, announced it’s trying to slash $40 million a year off its personal property taxes, money that goes to 700 Southwest Ohio school districts, cities and villages.

This is going to have a big impact on the entire metropolitan area,” said Jonathan Boyd, treasurer of Cincinnati Public schools, which stands to lose $7.8 million a year. “They’re looking for a 40 percent reduction. The fact that it’s so large is the issue.”
