I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do. ~ Leonardo da Vinci

By Catherine Austin Fitts

Do you like to make things? Do you have friends or kids who like to make things? Then you want to know about the maker movement. To help and inspire you, this Thursday we will be joined by Dale Dougherty, the editor of MAKE, the leading magazine of the maker movement.

The maker movement grew out of DIY – “do it yourself.” What started out as woodworking and home improvement took a new turn with the developments in computer technology, electronics and new tools like lasers and 3-D printers. The maker movement was a next logical development.

Given the explosion of technologies and tools and the growth of the open source movement, it made sense that people who like to make things would like to share work spaces together and teach each other how to make things. Sure enough, the maker movement gathered in hackerspaces and now membership based workshops.

MAKE sponsored the first Maker Faire starting in 2006, because naturally makers like to get together and share what they know and what they are making.  Now in addition to the several that MAKE sponsors every year, there are independently produced maker faires happening all over the world. You can check for one near you here.

A young duo in Chicago are working on a documentary about the maker movement with funding raised through Kickstarter.

While learning about the maker movement, my favorite documentary and pick for this week’s Let’s Go to the Movies is Caine’s Arcade. This short film tells the story about a 9 year old named Caine in Los Angeles who made his own penny arcade from card board boxes. The publicity from the film has now helped Caine raise more than $200,000 (and counting) to fund his education, and a matching grant to help fund education for kids like him.
