    How do you use gold/silver as a medium of exchange in a social economy? How do you purchase with it? What good is a silver/gold bar or coin when you go to buy milk? Store cashiers won’t know how to give you change – perhaps won’t even be permitted to accept it. What good is it as an investment if you can’t use it anywhere? And then, what happens if the economy goes digital! Then what!??

  11. In Ask Catherine, you mentioned that good films are getting harder to find. Have you come across the 1996 French film “Belle Verte”? It is a humorous look at culture using the device of a representative from a healthy planet (beautiful scenes) who is sent to earth to report back on our conditions. It was banned for 10 years, likely for suggesting that people having to pay for food is crazy, what passes for food is toxic, and that advanced technology involves the development of higher capacities and is therefore completely organic etc.

    I noticed a distinct shift in the tone of Money and Markets this week. The news articles served more as a springboard, and a tennis match developed between you two that was highly informative, thought provoking, and engaging. John’s personality came out more strongly, as did the occasional curse (which made me smile).

    I do not know if this was a spontaneous development or if you decided as a duo to try this different approach.

  26. On Scotland’s plan to freeze rents – is it a good or bad policy? In a normal market I would probably agree with you, that all it does is kill the landlord / middle class. But … you have also reported on the identity of landlords: Mr Global in various guises. Housing makes up such a disproportionate persentage of an average household cost of living (lower and middels class) that i believe a freeze on rent would be a strike more against Mr Global than the middle class – except a few middle classers who have joined the ride in a highly leveraged manner (one of our Princes of Orange in Amsterdam for example). The argument of landlords not being able to pay the energy bills does not hold because (at least in the Netherlands), the tenant pays the enrgy bill, not the landlord.

    1. Mr. Global has the capital to endure the caps. The small guy does not and the freeze will significantly lower the values. Favor Mr. Global. Many ways for a government to protect tennants that do not violate fundamental property rights – which will just advantage Mr. Global in long run.

Yet in another place you wrote “In a highly leveraged company, the equity owner does not really have control.     If interest rates go up, would that give bond owners this power of destruction?

  34. Catherine: I don’t understand how the Fed can print so much money and still have the dollar be so strong. I was hearing that 80% of all USD issued was in the last 2 years. Is that true? I think there’s an unhelpful conflation in the common parlance between retail and wholesale currency, both denominated in USD. Your CBDC briefing does a good job of showing those two circuits and why they’re different, but related, and also exploring the new territory we are entering where the Fed can put money directly into the retail space. And my understanding is that they did that with the recent… what do you call it, QE?

    What I have trouble wrapping my brain around is how exactly the injection of money into the retail or wholesale sectors influences the bottom line for consumers. Where intuitively I would expect there to be a coupling, in practice the value of USD often does the opposite of what I expect. And does the value of USD actually relate to purchasing power, or is there again a decoupling?

    I’m reading now Michael Hudson’s book Superimperialism where he details how the petro dollar was set up, how the IMF and World Bank have used their policies to put USD in foreign nations hands, and without the ability to buy US stocks or real estates they mainly buy US treasury bonds, thereby propping up the value of our currency and fueling our colonial war machine. Hudson is the clearest voice I am aware of in sharing this knowledge. According to Hudson the CIA paid him to teach them how to implement his ideas after the publication of his book in 1971. So it’s quite a resource that he’s willing to share his perspective.

    Is this effect continuing to prop up the dollar in spite of the massive issuance? I’ve also heard stories from you and others that foreign nations are having difficulty getting their hands on USD to pay their debts, so that makes sense as a stabilizing force.

    My understanding is 1) the policy described by Superimperialism is still working, but the wheels are going to come off the bus sometime in the next decade, 2) the money printed by the Fed ended up in the hands of Blackrock and other powerful allies… and is being applied very carefully and precisely to exercise their takeover of real assets without crashing the economy.

    I heard one of your guests (or maybe it was Titus) mention that money is seeping into the economy in “weird” ways, and he was compiling a report on that. I’d like to read that if you have a link.

Someone on twitter started a hashtag ‘Trudeau must go’ and now Canadians are tweeting selfies along with a few sentences about themselves and each post ends with “According to Trudeau, I’m an extremist…”. Those posting are either unvaccinated or anti-mandate. It is currently the highest trending topic on Twitter in Canada with over 100K tweets. It is incredibly effective and the pro-mandate drones are in hysterics because it is putting faces on the outgroup and smashing the stereotype.

  41. Catherine: Ethereum has been working on “proof of stake” since their inception. What they didn’t have until recently was a mathematical proof that this approach would maintain the integrity of the network in the presence of potentially malicious actors. Proof of work was less complex, and had already been vetted both theoretically and in practice. So it was their strategy until now.

    Bitcoin in terms of the crypto ecosystem tends to favor proven, robust technology, and keeping their protocol simple. Ethereum tends to be more experimental, and includes “smart contracts”, little automatons with their own wallets. Because of the additional complexity of Ethereum its security footprint is fundamentally more difficult to validate than Bitcoin’s, but it also has more flexibility and use cases.

    Ethereum switching to proof of work comes at a very interesting time… when crypto is historically low. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ethereum take the lead over Bitcoin because of this. But what do I know? I am a programmer who has studied the whitepapers, worked with other researchers, and gone to some conferences at Stanford. But I don’t own any crypto and don’t play the speculation game myself.

    Two things that have always concerned me with crypto: 1) The trade volume is almost entirely speculative, very little transactional, 2) a currency system is a proxy for human values – what behavior are we incentivizing?

    I would like to see local currencies pegged to real goods and services, anchored by clearinghouses. What if communities and regions could embody their values by incentivizing food, housing, manufacturing, and the furtherance of life? A clearinghouse could keep reserves in the form of USD, gold, grain, bullets… whatever. And could dispense those reserves to empower the means of production within the community. This would free up capital for purchase of energy, which is ultimately the basis for any tangible economy.

    There is no reason we can’t create sovereign currency systems, and sovereign communication networks. We have all of the building blocks available to do this now. But to my knowledge it has not been done yet. One of the key pieces missing is that the geeks who understand cryptography have not understood how to present a message that is relevant to pressing human concerns. I think also the Silicon Valley echo chamber has neglected to notice that the political right may be the ideal customer for products which deliver on tangible sovereignty.

            After a few minute I still have not gotten an introduction to who the speaker is and what is his background and personal economics and potential conflicts – basic info is not reviewed or disclosed. There are many basic things that a presenter can do to help you vet them. He does not do.

            So – speaker is stranger and I do not have what I need to vet him. I am just supposed to trust him?

            Feels to me that there is a reasonable chance that entrainment and subliminal programming has been overlaid. Hence, trying to watch it becomes very energy expensive. Even potentially dangerous if there is entrainment.

            The introduction is not respectful of the users time – potential giveway that this may be staged. So no reason for me to wait for the content. The stranger is not respecting my time, so I do not want to run risk or invest time because information that comes from people you do not know, can not vet or can not trust is not actionable intelligence.

      1. nothing odd. this was a so-called “general debate” in the German Bundestag which took place on Feb 27th, right after Feb 24th (start of the Russian SMO/war in Ukraine). Merz is the leader of the opposition party (CDU). to me, it sounded like a Freudian slip of the tongue (as he was referring to the day of which we all remember where we were when we heard the news – Sep 11th, 2001), he was about to say that everybody will remember where they were on this 24th of February 2022 when they first heard about the war in Ukraine – there he used the word “september” instead of “february”. He sounded more agitated in that speech than usual, because of that it sounded to me really just like a mistake (and yes, he had worked for BlackRock for several years after leaving German politics for some while before coming back when the “succession” question for Angela Merkel was getting under way).

  49. These sustainable goals and ESG is everywhere. Its like a virus that infiltrated every company and the government here in New Zealand too.
    I am in the habit to point out to my colleagues and friends at work how the company emails we get as employees, fit in with the whole ESG goal.

    I work for a large corporate here, so the propaganda is thick and fast and its a constant stream of “Diversity and Inclusion” and “Climate Change” etc etc

    I went from someone annoyed at all this a year ago, to now enjoying using each email or company campaign to teach those around me, of the real plans behind it and how our company is just scrambling to ‘up’ their ESG score for foreign investment deals. No other reason really.

    I have managed to open my managers eyes to this too, and I reckon he is spreading the knowledge amongst his colleagues. We’re low in the company chain though, but the more informed we are, the better. We need to tell people around us what’s really behind all the rainbow diversity equity inclusion campaigns that bothers them quietly and to which its become impossible to speak out openly, so we need to focus on attacking these policies at their ideological source. The anti freemarket scam of a cartel system that is ESG.

    The Washington Post, which is not really reliable, has an extensive article on what the rail strike means, and it affects my hobby job (chairman of a water utility) in the sense of their mentioning specifically chlorine gas for water treatment. This signals me that there is more afoot than just disgruntled brakemen and conductors.

    I think they have run up test balloons in Jackson, Mississippi and West Baltimore to begin scaring people about water treatment. That’s what particularly concerns me about this train strike and the fact that the communist Washington Post is mentioning such a specific matter. You are really “hosed” without clean water.     1. I doubt that. In Romania I paid ~80Euro in one month and I have used AC most days. Salary is 500Euro(fast food worker)- 2500(Programmer)- 3000(Doctor), and I thing Bulgaria is about the same.
      On the other hand, food prices went up 2-3 times. A lot of people have no money left after buying food and paying utilities. I also expect that heating cost to at least double this winter.
