“The serious seeker realizes that searching is not with intellect alone, seeing is not only with the eyes. There is an inner knowing, an inner sight.“
~ The Modern Mystery School of Astara
By Junious Ricardo Stanton
The ancient Mystery Schools traditions still exist. There are organizations carrying on their legacy of raising consciousness, encouraging enlightenment, and helping truth-seekers find themselves and discern their true purpose and mission in life.
On the Metanoia Series this week, we introduce you to Astara, a modern Mystery School that offers time-honored teachings and techniques for inner peace, enlightenment, healing, and harmony. Founded in 1951, Astara seeks to “bridge the gap between contemporary Eastern and Western spiritual philosophies, presenting their mysteries in a clear context with the wisdom of ancient spiritual truths.â€
Join me as I converse with Rev. John Gregory Toews, the CEO and Head Minister of Astara, as he shares what his organization has to offer.

The Modern Mystery School: Welcome to the ultimate mystery of life
Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.â€
John 18:20-21
Sometimes as humans, especially when we feel that things are too simple or there must be more to something than what is on the surface, we tend to make mountains out of mole hills. There’s nothing mysterious about The Word of God or secret keys to unlocking anything in life apart from The Word of God. There is no guru or ancient ascended master that has the answers or a better way than that presented by The Bible and especially through Christ Jesus’ own words. Oh and by the way, those words are straight from the mouth of God since that’s who Jesus has always been since before time and space, not some Christ other than The Lord Jesus who just decided to plan out a body to inhabit. I AM implies eternal existence after all. Read the 66 books for yourself. It’s pretty obvious, and in black and white — unless you have a red letter edition. 😉
Jesus came so, “that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly†(John 10:10b). As Christians, we must allow the Holy Spirit to renew our minds. This means we must get over ourselves, humbling ourselves before The Lord. We must put aside our human logic and intellect at times, especially when it is subjected to eastern mysticism and New Age enlightenment. The Book of Enoch, the Apocrypha, and the like may carry some validity; they also may not. The Bible, The Word of God is enough. Enough is enough. Always has been, always will be.
I’m just gonna put this right here too. Enjoy!

I am a student of both Christianity and Eastern Mysticism. I was raised on Christ’s teachings, and started practicing Hatha Yoga & Mediation at 21. For me, there is no contradiction between the two: Quite the contrary. Through Eastern Mystical practices I have been blessed to realize God more fully, the very same God that Jesus Christ taught me about. The God who advised me to, “Be still and know.”
Gosh, was shocked and disappointed to find this on Solari!
The following is a passage from Earth’s Earliest Ages, by G.H. Pembler written in 1876, page 358, from the section exploring Spiritualism, Theosophy and Buddhism. A classic masterpiece and must read for Christians but especially those considering the New Age stuff.
“But, by comparing the Bible with the old Mythologies and the opinions of modern Theosophists, we have shown that the whole system of Mysteries was probably communicated by those fallen angels who transgressed just before and immediately after the Flood. And such a source, though undoubtedly ancient, can scarcely be expected to inspire confidence.
Moreover, the past results of this philosophy afford but little ground for boasting . Neither time nor opportunity had been lacking to it when the crisis came, and its leaders were trembling at the rapid progress of Christianity: but what was the state of the world after so long a subjection to the power and guidance of the initiates? It was a state of moral ruin; and there would be no great difficulty in selecting passages from contemporaneous writers which would furnish material for a sketch of the universal depravity of the time of the Caesars such as would make many a modern indifferentist stand aghast. Meanwhile Christianity has never yet had the world under her power, as the initiates had for so many centuries. Her beginnings were small and contemptible: she was not assisted by organized Lodges, whose members included almost all the educated and respectable men in nearly every town of the Empire. On the contrary, she was at first environed with cruel persecutions; and then, as soon as it became evident that neither fire, nor wild beasts, not the tortures of the executioner could drive her out of the world, she was stealthily seized from behind by those very initiates who are now held up to our admiration, and who, when they made good their hold, distorted her form, disfigured her heavenly beauty with the brand of Satan and compelled her thenceforth to walk the earth loaded with the heavy fetters of political Heathenism. Yet, after all this maltreatment, she retained sufficient force to ameliorate somewhat the condition of the whole world, and to become the power of God and the wisdom of God to those who received her in sincerity.â€
And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. Luke 21:8
Yes, I have read GH Pember and many others… and as a missionary, a follower and servant of Jesus the Messiah, I can say that this activity is just sophisticated spiritism. Powerful deceptions masquerade as “angels of light” even as Satan masquerades as an angel of light. Satan offers supernatural enlightenment, power and hidden knowledge to those who can be seduced by “secret knowledge.” The knowledge of God through Jesus the Messiah by the Holy Spirit is far greater. He still speaks to his servants and grants to them the power to heal the sick, the brokenhearted and those in the prisons of sin bound by evil spirits. There is no reason to engage the occult people who operate in the mystery cults except the call them to repent.
Like William and Alexandra, am not into Steiner/mystery schools/the esoteric. Enjoyed your information on Solari concerning spiritual warfare 3-4 years ago, however. Sorry Catherine, I have probably made you mad again, but as for me, I trust the Lord Jesus Christ and know with what is coming (already here), I need to focus on him.
I agree. I worry that too much spiritualism is creeping into “our side” of the political spectrum in a lot of cases. Some of which could be to change us from within.
Also, I thought that Rosicrucianism came from the illuminati? Seems to me this could be a prep school for the other side. I really enjoy Solari and to each their own I guess, but I’m planning to focus on the Savior for my spiritual development.
Initially, I found the subject matter fascinating but thankfully my understanding of the Bible was growing at a faster rate and won out!
I liked this sharing about mystery schools and what I call “soul work”, esoteric traditions are not the same as the occult. I have experienced that we need the contact with the inner self in order to truly surrender to the divine. It is so important to EMBODY and KNOW the Christ–beyond the mind. And, I am an out-of-the-box baptized, Holy Spirit filled Christian.
From everything I know, Christians don’t practice in esoterics or refer to The Christ beyond the mind….
Junious is a devout Christian – who walks his talk – something that I have found not as common as I would hope. And he explores countless traditions searching to understand personal transformation. IMO Christianity embraces open minds and learning.
I am halfway through the interview and once again, coming away with a sense of comfort and motivation to continue to learn and practice the aspects and teachings of the higher orders. Because of Catherine and Thomas Meyer I have been deep in the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and as of now, this interview and the materials shared, the work, for me, is going deeper. Thank you, once again, Catherine.
thank you for this conversation!
I’m glad you enjoyed it. So am I.
What? No link that we can click to join the illuminati?
Gnosticism is not my cup of coffee either.
For me the story of the 4 year old talking to his baby sibling was worth listening to the whole interview.
Fair enough, don’t believe in purism anyway as the only way to Rome.
I agree with that Catherine. Only for the openminded, however.
Hey, it is fashionable these days. Heck, they had Shamans addressing people at Davos this year.
