I have called my representative, Rep. Marsha Blackburn to request that she vote against HR 2749 (The Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009).

The Weston A. Price Foundation alert says as follows:

HR2749 will impose burdensome regulations on small farmers and local food producers including registration fees and extensive paperwork requirements for which many small food businesses will not have the resources to comply. The ‘local food system’ is not the source of the food safety problems in this country, small farmers and local artisanal producers are part of the solution. HR 2749 would reduce FDA’s accountability while significantly increasing its power.

The bill would empower FDA to conduct warrantless searches of business records without any evidence whatsoever that a violation has occurred, to order a quarantine prohibiting or restricting the movement of food in a geographic area. HR 2749 also creates severe criminal and civil penalties with the potential for substantial fines for even minor violations of the law.

Urge your Representative to vote against HR 2749 and support a food safety bill that will target imports and industrial foods while leaving small farmers and local food producers alone.

  1. The only problem is they all work for the same people. The ones who fill there war chests that they use against us blasting us with lies about what they plan on doing about the debt our great-grandchildren will have until we break down and vote for them. A perfect example being there getting ready to give Fannie Mae a bunch more money so they’ll have enough in there war chests to get themselves re-elected.

  2. I just called Rep. Blackburn’s office again to request she vote against it again! Her staff member answering the phone confirmed that she voted against it yesterday. Thank you Marsha Blackburn!

HR 2749 Fails to Pass, but House to Vote on Bill Again!

HR 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act, did NOT pass the House on Wednesday. It was scheduled on the Suspension Calendar, which meant no amendments could be offered and only 40 minutes of debate. But the proponents failed to muster the necessary two-thirds vote to pass the bill under suspension. Instead, 150 Members of Congress said “Stop!”

BUT THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER!!!

In a very unusual move, the Rules Committee met Wednesday afternoon and reported the bill to the floor a second time under what’s called a “closed rule,” which allows only one hour of debate. So the House may vote on HR 2749 again as soon as today, Thursday!

The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund is asking everyone to contact their U.S. Representatives AGAIN requesting that they vote against HR 2749.

Industrial food processors and food imports need effective regulation, but this should not be done at the expense of the ‘local food system.’ HR2749 will impose BURDENSOME REGULATIONS on many small farmers and local food producers including registration fees and extensive paperwork requirements for which many small food businesses will not have the resources to comply. The ‘local food system’ is not the source of the food safety problems in this country, small farmers and local artisanal producers are part of the solution.

H.R. 2749 “Food Safety” Bill – Defeated – for Now, Take Action

    PRESS RELEASE

    VICTORY!
    THE MONSTER’S DOWN …
BUT NOT OUT FOR THE COUNT, NOT YET.
    July 29, 2009

The U.S. House of Representatives, at 3:30 PM EST, on July 29th, voted against H.R.2749, the so-called “Food Safety Act of 2009.” This Act would have given the Federal Government unprecedented powers and control over the United States food supply, all in the supposed name of “food safety” but at great expense to health freedom. Fortunately, enough U.S. lawmakers saw through this charade to vote against the House Leadership’s strong push to pass this Bill through a special parliamentary procedure that limited debate but required a higher percentage vote in order to pass.
The vote today was 280 For and 150 Against the Motion to suspend the rules and pass H.R.2749. Under suspension, 2/3rds in favor are needed, or 287 Yea votes, for a Bill to pass. 148 No votes were needed to defeat the Bill. Many Democrats joined with Republican House members in opposition, voting against this Bill that would have made food less safe, not safer.
Is H.R.2749 dead for the rest of this session of Congress? No. The Bill stays on the regular order calendar and can be brought back up for a recorded vote later in the Session. So, the Federation will stay on top of this Bill in order to be sure it is defeated once and for all. With your support and quick action we can defeat H.R. 2749 again when it is brought to a vote again.
In the meantime, we thank all of our NHF members who contacted their Representatives to register their active opposition to this monstrosity. You made your voices heard.
“But do not rest on your laurels, contact your Representatives again to thank them for their support (or condemn them for not supporting health freedom) and urge them to vote against any and all attempts to pass H.R.2749! This is important.”
