46 years ago, I saw then-unknown Bruce Springsteen in the Villanova Field House as an opening act for top-billed Jackson Browne. Tickets were $2.50 apiece and it was not sold out. However, all who attended would have said The E-Street Band stole the show. A little over a year later, Born to Run (album) was out and Bruce was on the cover of Newsweek. The corporatization of the man had come to pass. I saw him again in a sold-out Spectrum in around 1983 during the Born in The USA tour for probably $40 a seat. The music was actually not as impressive by then, although it was ubiquitous.
You often quote “Before they can destroy you they must destroy your name.” Perhaps we could add that once they own you, they own your name and your product. There could never again be Greetings from Asbury Park or The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle.
