The release of Apple’s vision pro marks an inflection point for virtual and augmented reality. Because Apple’s vision pro has been described by all those who tried it as feeling like literal ‘magic’. The economy and business of VR is changing and needs to be talked about.
In my religious tradition fasting is a regular part of life. It’s primary goal is to to build self control. As technology has progressed, recommended fasting has often moved from just food to include tv and social media for those who struggle with addiction to those dopamine stimulators.
What this approach doesn’t address is the data gathering that occurs whenever social media and even smart tv are in use. Refraining from use of social media sounds like a way of resisting, but it, like all resistance, is full of added inconvenience. Cash instead of credit cards type of cure with a similar paradigm.
The marketing approach for virtual reality that Moon suggests will be used capitalizes on loneliness. The real world cure for that is physically present relationships with others. Cash has to change hands (a physical reality). Those of us who want to successfully resist being lab rats for this brave new world will need strong resolve and action.
Like the built environment of the suburbs that make car use mandatory, the virtual environment of the internet is fast becoming the only way to do business. You are reading this via the internet.
Intentions do not determine who we are, actions do. Short of becoming strict Amish I would love to hear further discussions on these pressures pushing us towards submission to the technology lords.
There is already at least one study released that shows the negative health affects on the brain of using VR technology long term.
I am going to be the last person I know to get one of these things. Link in NEVER! It i difficult enough to ger real reality in the media I have to deal with; I do not want another gizmo in my life to further isolate me from what is really going on. I shouldnot even have to say real reality: it just shows the corruption of the language! When I want fiction, that is what novels are for. I am still using my old Galaxy S7 cell phone that will use up to 4G. I normally leave it turned off for days at a time. Sometimes over a week. When I have to upgrade it to 5G, perhaps I will quit using cell phones altogether.
