Would anyone care to comment on what a biometric-based employer verification system is?

Sorry forgot to add this little tidbit as well…
“The political candidate who understands TV-whatever his party, goals or beliefs-can gain power unknown in history. How he uses this power is, of course, quite another question. But the basic thing to remember about the electric media is that they inexorably transform every sense ratio and thus recondition all our values and institutions. The overhauling of our traditional political system is only one manifestation of the retribalizing process wrought by the electric media, which is turning the planet into a global village.” {ibid}
“The extensions of man’s consciousness induced by the electric media could conceivably usher in the millennium, but it also holds the potential for realizing the Anti-Christ –Yeats’ rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouching toward Bethlehem to be born.” {ibid}

and be sure to read them as they are of such profound importance and that in a very concise way. These people at the University of Ottawa hit the nail squarely on the head!
Furthermore remember the words of Marshall McLuhan…
“Today in the electronic age of instantaneous communication, I believe that our survival, and at the very least our comfort and happiness is predicated on understanding the nature of our new environment, because unlike previous environmental changes, the electric media constitute a total and near instantaneous transformation of culture, values and attitudes. This upheaval generates great pain and identity loss, which can be ameliorated only through a consciousness of its dynamics. If we understand the revolutionary transformations caused by new media, we can anticipate and control them; but if we continue in our self-induced subliminal trance, we will be their slaves.
Because of today’s terrific speed-up of information moving, we have a chance to apprehend, predict and influence the environmental forces shaping us-and thus win back control of our own destines. The new extensions of man and the environment they generate are the central manifestations of the evolutionary process, and yet we still cannot free ourselves of the delusion that it is how a medium is used that counts, rather than what it does to us and with us. This is the zombie stance of the technological idiot. It’s to escape this Narcissus trance that I’ve tried to trace and reveal the impact of media on man, from the beginning of recorded time to present.” http://www.vcsun.org/~battias/class/454/txt/mclpb.html

Schumer mentioned many “proposals for practical and effective biometric-based employment verification systems” but what it looks like to me is a rationalization for getting all Americans into a biometric database. First they might demand it in certain regions and situations only, as verification of identity before being employed or receiving one’s first pay cheque. But eventually you’ll be using your biometric ID when you buy groceries or start your GPS-tracked car. It’s what I’d do if I were them, and who is going to stop it? One step closer to being able to delete people. Which is to say, to be able to prevent someone from being able to travel, spend or earn any money on practically anything, take in or send out info via any electronic technology, through a quick change in their status in a file.
Databases can collect vast amounts of data on non-participants through various means such as farming information from friends, relatives and co-workers, as well as using patterns to make good guesses. People’s ignorance of the power of databases leaves them particularly vulnerable. They hand over their grocery and pharmacy data for pennies without considering that they’re inviting strangers with unknown intentions into their private lives. How many for example have considered that their changing shopping habits over time could be related to advertising campaigns in order to form a reliable psychological profile of them? It isn’t just that you bought Dove or Ivory soap one day. The data set is huge and forms an immensely detailed hologram that when properly analyzed and interpreted is capable of providing much more than indications of price sensitivity, or what brand name item might yield enough market share to a house brand to make it’s provision worthwhile. That hologram can be viewed from angles only limited by the skill and imagination of analysts to form a clear picture of you from each of those angles. The little bits of seemingly useless data can be loosely compared to the little dots in a photo, except a large database can fill in dots accurately where there is no real info.
Eventually you could be required to have a valid biometric device on you at all times. Fakes could be nearly impossible to make, and anyone without a device could be rapidly detected and dealt with. In this way it wouldn’t be necessary to frequently scan people’s biometric info from their physical person, but merely to scan for people paired with devices (and people who aren’t), and passively scan devices often. This would make it seem far less intrusive.
Biometric identification is technology which uses personal physical characteristics that supposedly unambigously and uniquely identify a person. For example, the eye’s iris or retina can be scanned and compared with previous scanned records to recognize a person. Other familiar examples are voiceprints, fingerprints, cranial markers of the face, indeed almost any biological pattern that is conveniently available for scan can be used.
The purpose is to control access to sensitive information or locations.
Biometric identification contrasts with passwords ard ID numbers which are knowledge, not biological in origin.
Basically the Legislation of Morality wherein instead of a birth certificate and/or social insurance card or as is the case with the U.S. a green card, ones proof of identification and/or citizenship will be through the use of a bio-identifer. That is an eye scan, or hand scan or something to that effect. With the word metric however being used that ultimately implies the use of a number which would of course simplify the whole process by just laser tattooing or chipping ones own unique number on their person some how.
So its a whole new kind of Social Insurance System {SIN} Get it! A whole new kind of SIN!!!!!
The grand-daddy of all welfare states as those behind the scences are probably referring to it as!
