Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, occurs every February 14. Across the United States and around the world, loved ones exchange candy, flowers, and gifts, all in the name of St. Valentine.
The history of Valentine’s Day—and the story of its patron saint—are shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that Valentine’s Day as we know it today contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. In honor of one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and through later folk traditions, the holiday has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.
