I love the freedom and the adventure of fishing—and the competition. My brothers are fishermen as well, and at the end of the week, we all want to bring home the largest catch.”
~ Peke Wouda

This week, the Solari Report presents the interview I conducted earlier this year with Dutch shrimp fisherman Peke Wouda for the 2nd Quarter 2023 Wrap Up, “Dutch Farmers and Fishermen: Local Heroes in the Global War on Our Food and Property Rights.”

Wouda’s grandfather and father were both fishermen, so Wouda grew up fishing, going out on the boats with his relatives during school vacations. Wouda offers valuable insights into the double standards and seemingly irrational regulations that are driving Dutch fishermen out of their time-honored fishing grounds in favor of wind farms and “sustainability” schemes. The wind farms are part of the North Sea nations’ ambitious plan to have 30,000 wind turbines by 2050 to support data centers. As Wouda points out, “We [fishermen] always have to prove that we are not damaging nature, but they can build these offshore wind farms without doing the research first to understand what effects this will have. There are so many wind turbines that you cannot even find the fishermen anymore.”

With regard to “sustainability,” Wouda asks, “Where are they going to get fish from when the fleet is gone? They will need to import it. Is this then ‘sustainably’ caught?” Wouda is one of many Dutch fishermen who understand that there is a deeper agenda behind the “green” rhetoric that will benefit neither fishermen nor the people they feed.
